May 2024 meeting

Stones River Woodworkers Club Members,

This is a reminder that our next meeting is Tuesday 28 May 2024. We will gather at 6 PM to 6:30 PM. We still meet at St. Marks United Methodist Church; 1267 N. Rutherford Blvd. Murfreesboro, TN.  From 6 to 6:30 is a good time for checking out the Show & Tell projects and asking questions from our members on how they do some of their woodworking. The meeting will start at 6:30 PM.

FROM THE PRESIDENT MAY 2024

I am really excited about our presenter this month, Amanda Stephenson, as we are to be treated to a full-time woodworker, teacher, and Murfreesboro native.  Amanda specializes in epoxy used in flatwork; she has her own teaching studio offering classes throughout the month.  Samples of her work can be seen at her web site listed in the newsletter.   Please make it a point to attend our May 28th meeting as it promises to be a good one.

I am attempting to put the finishing touches on the upcoming Shop Tour list and I would like to thank everyone who volunteered their shop for the tour.  Currently we have 5 members participating but it would be great to have more.  Remember this is not about the biggest or best shop but about how you make use of what you have.  You may think your shop is not interesting but everyone attending will take something away they can apply to their own shop.  Please give me a call or text to be added to the Shop Tour list.  Call or text me at Sam Clark 615 440 8300.

Classes:  We just finished our classes on Shaker boxes hosted by Mary Nichols and as always it was great.  Mary is very talented, and this class is a hit with the club.  I will be updating everyone regarding additional classes at our regular meeting.

There are several projects in the works pertaining to St. Mark’s and I will be referencing those with the group at the next meeting.

As President Sam Clark mentioned, our presenter this meeting is Amanda Stephenson of Amanda Stephenson’s Sapphire Wood Studio, which is in Murfreesboro serving Nashville, Middle Tennessee and beyond.

She is excited to be the guest speaker at our May 28th meeting. Her web site is impressive and reflects her love of woodworking, artful creativity, and interesting use of epoxy. She is full time with her woodworking business and teaches classes. I am sure she will tell us about it all! This is one presentation you will not want to miss. You can check out her web site below. See you there!

An opportunity to make a custom jewelry box has been given to the SRWC. An area man wants a woodworker to make a custom jewelry box in time for his wife’s birthday on 5 August. He has a rough drawing, and wants to use juniper wood from his property. The wood has been milled to ¾ inch pieces. He has pictures of various items to be used in the making of the box. If you are interested, please see me at the meeting or email me (ferrarojr@aol.com) for more detailed information.

On a sad note, we want to mention the loss of Alice Jensen who passed away last week. She was an active member of the Stones River Woodworkers Club for many years. She frequently brought in her latest wood project made in a primitive style, or some potted flowers from her garden to give to club members. She will be remembered. RIP Alice.

SRWC Editor,

Lou Ferraro

“The workshop to me always means great atmosphere, working, smell of wood, dust and, at the end of the day, you’ve created something.”
